Urban dev’t: Douala 2 Council razes gare shops to ashes
Several business persons at “marché de la gare” in New Bell, Douala 2 subdivision have been rendered stranded following the demolition of their shops by agents of the Douala 2 council.
A bulldozer and an anti-riot van accompanied by security forces invaded the area and started bringing down the shops.
No second was given to them to remove their goods from their shops but they could only save a little while most got destroyed in the course of the demolition.
The now frustrated business individuals affirmed they were issued a quit notice a month ago but they stubbornly remained there because no other site was shown to them for the continuation of their economic activities.
According to the Mayor of the Douala 2 subdivision, Denis Fampou, the reason for this demolition exercise is to construct a modern market structure that will be cherished by the traders.
Expressing anger, the victims said they will now face challenges, including the inability to feed their families and generate money to pay their children’s school fees next academic year. Some of the frustrated traders are internally displaced persons from the North West and South West regions who say they suffered to get the little start-up capital that has now been thrown into the waters.
