Government statistics revealed that over 1246 patients undergoing dialysis nationwide are benefitting from the University Health Coverage (UHC).

The UHC, is a state-implemented health insurance fund. In its first phase amongst others, is affirmed to have reduced the burden of persons needing dialysis from XAF 520, 000 to 15,000 annually.

Adjudji Garba a beneficiary in Bertoua, East region said said since enrollment in April 2023 he has been able to consistently have his sessions.

“Before, we used to skip sessions due to lack of money. Now, we can come for dialysis anytime and this helps keep us in good health,” the beneficiary said.

Parents of children needing kidney dialysis like Nanou Marie in Bafoussam, West region are part of the recipients. She admitted that her son was managed on arrival.

The UHC to those undergoing dialysis in the South West capital, Buea, is a “miracle”. They confess that their health had continued to deteriorate inadvertently.

“I’ve been on dialysis for 12 years. We’ve suffered here for long. We used to spend as much as three to four days here since the machines were just four,” Kengafack Eric praised the addition of new dialysis machines.

About a hundred and fifty more patients at the Buea Dialysis Centre benefit according to the president of the patients, Pa Ojong Arrey. He informed me, “There have been tremendous changes.”
