A wave of kidnappings has hit the Bambui and Bambili university communities, with university professors, staff, and Reverend Sisters falling victim to unidentified gunmen. The incidents, which have escalated recently, have prompted a strong call for vigilance among residents and particularly during the ongoing election period.
On August 13, CNA learned that Professor Mbanga Lawrence of the University of Bamenda’s Faculty of Arts was kidnapped along with two other colleagues. The kidnapping took place just a few meters from Grace Pharmacy in Bambui, on the road leading to Bambili. According to an informant, the assailants were in an ash-colored RAV4 and also seized a vehicle belonging to the Reverend Sisters.
Initial reports from the informant indicated that Professor Mbanga was released after two days in captivity. The other two individuals kidnapped with him—another colleague and a postgraduate student from the same faculty—were released a day later, after three days in captivity.
This incident is the latest in a series of abductions targeting the academic community. Just last week, another university staff member was kidnapped near the Mile 4 bypass. The individual was later released, but their car was held as a guarantee for the payment of an unspecified ransom.
Adding to the growing concern, some Reverend Sisters were also reportedly kidnapped alongside two female staff members from the Higher Institute of Commerce and Management (HICM) on August 27. The victims were identified as Dzelamoyuy Laura and Ning Marie Clare, though their status remains unconfirmed.
Staff at the Higher Institute of Commerce and Management (HICM) are among those urging caution.
“We are all aware that some staff members of HICM were kidnapped yesterday around Bambui,” one message read. “A call for vigilance, particularly during this election period. Preferably drive back in a cluster. Avoid closing late.”
Residents and university staff are now being advised to take extra precautions, including traveling in groups and avoiding late-night movements, to ensure their safety.
