Some 524 laptops were handed to deserving students across 94 departments at the University of Buea during the 32nd matriculation ceremony on Saturday, November 23.
Over 9,000 undergraduate and more than 1000 postgraduate students were officially inducted into the university at the Herbert Ngandjo Endeley Amphitheatre. The laptops were a gift from the President, Paul Biya, and were donated on academic merit to deserving students.
The keynote speaker, Mr. Behyia Leonard, a 1993 alumnus, addressed the graduates under the theme “Building a Community of Respect, Diversity, and Inclusivity.” He emphasized personal responsibility and the importance of inclusivity, encouraging students to strive for success based on their own merits, not external connections. He also discussed the significance of the matriculation oath, urging mutual respect between students and lecturers.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Ngomo Horace Manga defined the ceremony as an initiation where students pledge to follow university regulations and uphold academic integrity. He reminded students of the dual investment in their education from their parents and the government, urging them to take their studies seriously.
Prof. Manga also highlighted the introduction of new courses at the university, aligned with a 2023 law aimed at fostering entrepreneurship. Additionally, students wore robes for the ceremony this year, a cost-effective change compared to traditional black suits, which is in line with Anglo-Saxon university traditions.
