UB introduces matriculation robes, schedule graduation for January

By Nchendzengang Tatah

It is now a new rule for students of the University of Buea (UB), Cameroon’s pioneer Anglo-Saxon varsity, to wear robes during matriculation, not suits. The Registrar, Prof. Eneke Bechem told the decision to student leaders in an October 15 meeting.

This will be implemented first during the 2024 Matriculation, which is slated for November 23. Prof. Eneke Bechem explained that this was a move in respect of the Anglo-Saxon culture in which UB is bred.

She also said it was a means through which, students without resources will evade the higher cost of purchasing suits. Considering that the robes are less costly and uniform. This development is observed by many to also be a form of income generation by the state-run institution.

Added to this upgrade, is the shift of UB’s 26th convocation to January 2025. A letter to school heads signed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Ngomo Horace Manga on November 20, shows the new graduation dates. The three-day event is now programmed to run on January 9, 10, and 11 at the Herbert Nganjo Open Amphitheater.

These changes in the 2024/2025 academic year, add to other reforms adopted in UB. The Ngomo Horace-led administration has stopped the payment of fees through Mobile Money. They ordered payment in banks, in a bit to curb fraud. This has however made the process lengthy and time-consuming according to many students.
