This is why Biya decreed Monday public holiday

Cameroonians expect a very long weekend as Biya decrees Monday, a public holiday as of right

Monday, August 14, 2023, has been decreed a public holiday all over the National territory by the President of the Republic.

The Presidential decree was signed on Thursday, August 10, 2023.

What prompts this holiday is the fact that the day follows a Sunday and falls before a Religious holiday which happens to be Tuesday, August 15, 2023, the Day of Assumption. A day, Catholics believe, Mary the mother of Jesus went to heaven, body, and soul.

Details are contained in Law No. 1973 which defines and fixes the system of legal holidays in Cameroon.

Law 73/5 of December 7, 1973, to regulate public holidays as amended and supplemented by law No 76/8 of July 8, 1976, in Cameroon should therefore be expected a very long weekend that will run till Tuesday, August 15, 2023.

Article 1: 3 of the above-mentioned law considers: Ascension Day, Good Friday; The Assumption; Christmas; The end of Ramadan festival, The sheep festival as religious legal holidays and celebrated as such, and other religiously inspired festivals.

Article 4 of the same law indicates that the President of the Republic may by decree, declare a holiday if the day following a religious legal holiday, is celebrated on a Sunday or if the day before or the day after a legal holiday, when the relevant holiday is celebrated on a Friday or Tuesday.

According to the law, the following day is assimilated into the holiday from the point of view of working conditions and Remuneration.
