Rising insecurity level at chapelle obili troubles inhabitants

Inhabitants of the Monte Chapelle Obili neighborhood are calling on the military to help restore the peace and security they hitherto enjoyed. According to them, the level of criminal activity in the area is alarming.

“I was returning from a meeting at about 8pm. I got down from the bike and was trying to cross the road when suddenly I noticed another bike coming close to me. I had a bag with me containing 300.000frs. Before I could even raise an alarm, my bag was snatched with all the money, my mobile phone and my ID card too. That money was meant to restock my store. I sell household items and I am thinking of moving out of Yaounde because this is not the first time I’m being robbed,” Ma Anastasia Nji complains.

“Usually it was very hard to hear anyone complain of getting robbed around Monte Chapelle Obili but now it has become normal because you sit somewhere even to relax and hear someone screaming for help. It is really not safe anymore and even strange. We are pleading with the Governor to please assign military forces to our area because we may start witnessing rape and murder cases,” Njoya Saidu narrates.

The insecurity has plunged the people into fear. “While others were busy enjoying the festive period, we only had it during the day because at night places were congested and scary. A lot of bad things happened and for most of us who fear, we stayed home from 7pm,” Evelyn Kekam recalls.

The people complain they are not even able to sun their clothes freely outside because they often get stolen. Women in particular have been advised to avoid hand bags and make sure they move in groups and avoid staying out late at night.
