Tensions rise between Fecafoot and Marc Brys over controversial interview

The relationship between Fecafoot and Marc Brys, head coach of the Indomitable Lions, is under strain following a formal request for clarification from the federation after Brys’ recent interview with a Belgian newspaper, DH, in which controversial comments were attributed to him regarding Samuel Eto’o.

Fecafoot’s Secretary General expressed concern over Brys’ remarks published on August 17, 2024, in which he purportedly stated that Eto’o had “succeeded as a footballer but failed in everything else.” The federation’s letter to Brys, dated August 18, demanded a response within 72 hours, citing possible violations of FIFA regulations concerning the conduct expected of coaches.

In a detailed letter signed by Marc Brys, he cited historical context from Eto’o’s 2019 interview with Radio France Internationale to underline that he stands firmly against being a “yes-yes” coach, advocating for honesty and objectivity in his approach to leading the team.

The coach lamented the lack of support from Fecafoot, recalling a series of frustrations that he faced during recent training sessions and matches, including the theft of training materials, the presence of unidentified individuals in his locker room, and even a physical altercation with one of the federation’s members.

Furthermore, Brys challenged Fecafoot’s decision-making process, stating that he was not consulted about the choice of venue for the team’s upcoming match against Namibia, emphasizing the importance of collaboration for the reconstruction of the national team. He expressed a desire for future matches to occur in Yaoundé, emphasizing the significance of engaging with local supporters.

In closing, Brys forged a path toward reconciliation, voicing his commitment to working cooperatively with Fecafoot. He stated, “I am not the enemy of Fecafoot… I want to be evaluated solely on my results and not on what I said or didn’t say.” He urged Fecafoot to foster a respectful atmosphere that would facilitate improved communication and collaboration towards achieving their shared goals of success in upcoming competitions.
