Teenager killed in Bandjoun construction site collapse

Bandjoun, Cameroon (CNA)– A 19-year-old man, Kamga, tragically lost his life in a landslide at a construction site in Boyoum, a locality in Bandjoun, West Region. The incident occurred on Monday, July 15th, leaving the victim’s family and community devastated.

Kamga’s grandmother, Mama Marie Waffo, recounted the heartbreaking news. “He wanted to earn some money during the holidays,” she explained, expressing her deep sorrow. “He had been working at the site for a few days.”

According to reports, a wall of earth collapsed on Kamga while he was working. Although friends attempted to rescue him, their efforts were unsuccessful. He was rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.

Kamga had recently completed secondary school and reportedly participated in the just-concluded Baccalaureate exams.

Residents are pointing fingers at the construction contractor, alleging the use of inexperienced young workers and a lack of safety measures at the site.

“There were no safety precautions in place,” stated a resident. “He didn’t even have a proper ladder to climb out.”

This tragedy raises concerns about construction safety standards in Cameroon, particularly regarding the use of young workers and the implementation of necessary safety protocols.

Kamga’s death serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety in the workplace.
