Teachers in the North West and South West regions call for more support towards the discharge of their functions. In commemorating activities of the International Teachers Day on October 5, 2024, with the theme; “Valuing teacher voices: towards a new social contract for education”.

The South West regional delegate of basic education, Madam Elangwe Rose Bome said a lot more had to be done for teachers in all aspects, to brand the teacher as a good example and improve their life and working conditions.

“All what the teacher needs is the support. When you look at the financial aspect, teachers need even dressing allowances. Because every day we must appear good to mirror what we expect of the children.”

She however praised the award of medals this year to some teachers of the region. While saluting those who earned other recognition for their efforts. “Insofar as education cannot wait, we as teachers cannot wait to teach children,” the delegate assured of the teacher’s commitment to the challenging dynamics.

The celebration this year like previously, was characterized by a separatist-imposed lockdown in the English-speaking regions. The trade unionists said it was a show of how the teachers were restricted and violated.

Teachers have been caught amid an eight-year unfolding armed conflict in the North West and South West which has targeted education and its stakeholders. While several have been killed, others have relocated or remained pressured by employers to brave the odds characterised by insecurity, amidst unfavorable remuneration and inadequate didactic material.
