Camp Yabassi Locals Rendered Homeless.

Several inhabitants of Camp Yabassi in the Douala II municipality have been rendered homeless following the demolition of their homes. According to the locals the demolition was ordered by an unknown individual who surfaced claiming ownership of the large portion of land on which they constructed their houses.

He was assisted in the early Monday demolition by a battery of security forces who ensured any form of protest or violence was contained.

Victims of the demolition exercise were compelled to evacuate their homes. On their part they decried injustice and said most of them had been occupying the said parcel of land for over 50 years:

“The traditional ruler of Camp Yabassi gave us the permission to build here. Suddenly an individual comes from where no one knows saying the land is his. It’s unacceptable!” one of the victims cried out.

“We will not sit and fold our arms. This land belongs to us and justice must prevail” another victim joins in.

After demolishing many homes, the agents left the site promising to return for continuation of works on an unannounced day.

A departure that permitted others whose houses had not been touched to safely evacuate their belongings.
