Senior Nigerian politician, wife and a doctor found guilty of organ harvesting in UK
Ike Ekweremadu, 60, his wife Beatrice Ekweremdu, 56, and Dr. Obinna Obeta, 50, were found guilty of conspiring to harvest the organ of a young Nigerian man for a kidney transplant of their daughter, a UK court has said. Their daughter, Sonia Ekweremdu, who dropped out of school because of kidney disease, was found not guilty.
In 2022, a street trader from Lagos was brought to the UK to donate his organ to the daughter of the former Senate Vice president.
The jury said the man had been offered an illegal award for the exercise. The Ekweremadus denied any wrongdoing, adding that they were victims of a scam. But the Jury found that the rich lawyer never had any direct contact with the victim because he was afraid of his political career.
The victim has rushed to a Police station, crying out that he did not know the terms of the contract and how the donation was supposed to be done, fearing for his life.
The jury also said the victim was presented as a cousin to Sonia.
They will be officially sentenced in May 2023.
