Senegal: From prison to presidency, Diomaye Faye’s remarkable journey

By Charity Nginyu

From a humble beginning as a tax inspector to Senegal’s President-elect, Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s journey is nothing short of remarkable.

Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a Senegalese politician and former tax inspector, ascended to the presidency amidst a tumultuous political landscape.

His journey from a tax inspector to becoming a trusted lieutenant of Ousmane Sonko, the leader of PASTEF, culminated in his election as the President of Senegal in 2024.

Educated at the prestigious National School of Administration in Dakar, Faye’s political career was marked by both triumphs and tribulations.

His tenure as the General Secretary of PASTEF was characterized by a commitment to system change and left-wing pan-Africanism, advocating for Senegal’s sovereignty and challenging the economic dominance of former colonial powers, particularly France.

Faye’s candidacy faced a significant setback when he was apprehended and detained on charges of spreading false news, contempt of court, and defamation of a constituted body. However, his release, alongside Ousmane Sonko, just days before the election, underscored the resilience of his political campaign.

A man of complex personal life, Faye is known to have two spouses, Marie Khone Faye and Absa Faye, with whom he shares four children.

Despite personal and political challenges, Faye remained steadfast in his vision for Senegal, promising to navigate the country toward a future free from external economic influences.
