Senegal beat Cameroon, time to pen down Song’s balance sheet
By Stephen TADAHA
The indomitable Lions of Cameroon lost their second international friendly of the October 2023 FIFA break.
The boys of Rigobert Song Bahanag were beaten 1-0 by the Teranga Lions of Senegal at the Bollaert Delelis stadium in Lens, France on Monday, October 16, 2023.
The lone goal of the match came in at the 35th minute from Sadio Mané through a penalty. This defeat makes it the second in a row and the Lion’s 7th defeat since the arrival of Head Coach, Rigobert Song Bahanag over a year ago.
The former captain of the indomitable Lions has had a below-average performance since he took over from Antonio Concenciao on February 28, 2022. In 16 games played so far as Head coach of the National team, the 47-year-old has won just 4 games, against Algeria, Burundi twice, and Brazil. The Lions have played 5 draws and have suffered 7 defeats. The team has conceded 18 goals (an average of 2,6 goals conceded per match) and has scored 16 ( an average of 2,3 goals scored per match) for a goal difference of minus 2.
Monday’s defeat to Senegal came at a moment when the national team is preparing for to 2023 Africa Nations Cup to take place in Côte d’Ivoire in January and Senegal happens to be one of Cameroon’s opponents at the continental football jamboree. The two teams will meet on January 17, 2023, at the group stage of the competition.
The current performance therefore puts into doubt the adjective “Indomitable ” used to describe the attitude of Cameroon’s National football selection. The team’s indomitable spirit is gradually disappearing and becoming a talking point on everyone’s lips.
