Regis Mughe left out of OM squad against Thionville FC
Regis Mughe has still not been cleared to play for Olympique of Marseille after he snubbed Cameroon’s call-up for the AFCON 2023 in Côte d’Ivoire.
He is not among the 21 players selected by Gennaro Gattuso for Marseille’s round of 32 cup match against Thionville-Lusitanos on Sunday, January 7.
The French club is avoiding FIFA sanctions. Mughe cannot be used if FECAFOOT has not given its accord.
This comes at a time when Gattuso is struggling with a reduced team as seven of his players have gone to represent their countries at the AFCON.
The coach addressed Mughe’s case over the weekend, highlighting that they are waiting on FECAFOOT. He pointed out that it was the player’s decision not to honour the national team call-up.
“I read that we were the ones as a club, that advised him not to go to the AFCON. I want to clarify that it was his decision, and we simply supported as a club” Gatusso disclosed.
Regis Mughe stayed at Olympique of Marseille with the hope of getting more playing time given the absence of several players selected for the AFCON. His move seems to have been miscalculated.
The 19-year-old has just seven appearances with the club this season, which is what he sought to improve.
