Professional player killed after taking part in local championship in Atok
People in Bertoua, chief town of the East Region are still in shock following the death of a professional football player from Bertoua.
William Martial Mbengue was a professional football player for Equato Guinean side, Inter Littoral. Being in Bertoua for holidays, the player was among others who were recruited as mercenaries by a local team taking part in a holiday championship in Atok, a localilty in Upper Nyong Division, East Region of Cameroon.
Reports say after their game on Sunday August 6 which they won against a team from the locality, Martial was burnt in a house which was set ablaze by angry supporters of losing side who could not digest the defeat.
“According to news from my teammates who returned from the game, they all went to Atok, to reinforce a team taking part in a holiday championship there. After winning the match and grabbing their qualification for the next round, as the village is just by the roadside, they decided to return to Bertoua. Martial had an appointment in Yaoundé and decided to spend the night there before leaving for the nation’s capital the next day.” one of his mates said.
” Martial was offered a night by a good Samaritan. The room where he was spending the night was discovered in flames during the night and the door blocked from outside ” he added.
The former player of Panthère du Nde was removed and taken to the Bertoua Regional Hospital from where he was referred to a hospital in Yaoundé but later passed away in a Hospital in Douala.
According to family sources, 70% of Martial’s body was touched by flames.
