Parliament: Cavaye, Niat re-election no surprise

Several Cameroonians have been reacting to the re-election of Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, 83, and Marcel Niat Njifenji, 88, at the helm of the country’s lower and upper houses of parliament respectively. From every indication, many expected nothing different.

“No news, we are used to appointments in the name of elections,” Frankabang Mbilo, based in Douala, comments. “I expected nothing new, same ancestors.”

Another Cameroonian Gabila Eric, says “at least the only name [Cavaye Yeguie Djibril] I never forget. As I knew it, it remained the same. Thank him for making me pass civics in the good old days. I guess too my children will be proud as that will be the only name for them to memorize.”

“No new question in general exams in school. My dad met this man and my son too,” Beng another resident in Douala added.

Marcel Niat Njifenji was given a third mandate, while Cavaye Yeguie Djibril’s 31-year leadership was once more extended.

“I give thanks to His Excellency Paul Biya, the National President of the CPDM, for the renewed confidence. I will never disappoint in my mission,” Cavaye said on Monday.

“To all the members of the house, regardless of your political leaning, I will work with everyone without discrimination or disregard,” the House Speaker said.

It is worth noting that the entire bureau of the 2022 legislative year was re-elected.
