Opposition politicians rebuke Mvila SDO’s order to march with Biya’s effigy
Militants of some opposition political parties in Cameroon have rejected an order from the SDO for the Mvila Division in the South region in the course of a meeting with members of political parties to brandish President Paul Biya’s effigy during March past on ceremonial grounds in his area of command, on May 20, 2024.
“It’s uncalled for. We will not do that. We cannot be living in a democracy and then we are practicing authoritarianism. We’re celebrating national unity and not the birthday of President Paul Biya.” Henry Kedjiang, National Communication Secretary of the SDF fumed in anger.
“It is abnormal to order political parties like kids. What is wrong with what they have been marching with before? It is unconstitutional.” Fah Elvis Tayong, deputy national communication secretary, CRM argued.
“It’s an insult to our multi-partism, democracy, our freedom of belonging, Cameroonians, and even to President Paul Biya”. Bah Akwen Nadieh, UPC youth wing leader.
To these opposition militants, the Mvila SDO is merely chasing the shadow and making a mockery of himself.
“I think the SDO should withdraw such a statement because it doesn’t go well with Cameroonians. Such a statement is instead provocative to an extent. We should not divert our attention from issues of this country. We are not looking at Biya as a demi-god. We want critical issues to be resolved.”
“When such an official starts making such a statement, it tells you that we are heading towards the end of a regime.” Henry Kedjiang and Fah Elvis Tayong stated, respectively.
To UPC’s Bah Akwen Nadieh, this is rather a political strategy by the Biya regime to discredit opposition political parties and woo more supporters for the CPDM party.
