Only 5 Cameroonians present at Africa-wide Baptist women’s summit
By Hans Ngala
There was a bit of irony at the continental meeting of Baptist women in Africa which recently ended in Liberia. Two Cameroonians were stepping down as both continental President and Treasurer, but there was no massive Cameroonian delegation to cheer them on.
Marthe Ekollo stepped down as the continental President of the Baptist Women’s Union of Africa (BWUA) while Yembe Caroline also stepped down as Treasurer of the BWUA but both women only had three other Cameroonians to cheer them on.
Baptist Women’s Union of Africa is an arm of the All Africa Baptist Fellowship (AABF) which the Cameroon Baptist Convention (CBC) and the Union des Eglises Baptiste du Cameroun (UEBC) are both member churches of.
According to one of the attendees at the conference who spoke at one of the CBC churches in Yaounde:
“This was an amazing time of worship with fellow Baptist women from different countries across Africa. I felt so close to the Lord and I must confess that my faith was strengthened during this time of fellowship.”
She also added that “There were around 200 Nigerian women, around 100 Kenyans and several hundreds more from different countries but there were only 5 of us from Cameroon”.
She then went on to urge more Cameroonian women to make an effort to attend these kinds of international Christian gatherings.
Our source also revealed that the trip to Liberia cost them about FCFA 1.2 million but that it was worth the experience.
Her revelations revealed the unwillingness of most Cameroonians to spend money on things that will add value to their lives but preferring to drink most of the time.
The 14th Continental Conference of Baptist Women’s Union of Africa (BWUA) took place at the Ricks Institute in Brewersville, Liberia under the theme “Abundant Life” culled from John 10:10.
The next continental meeting for Baptist women in Africa has been scheduled to take place in Kinshasa, Congo in three years’ time.
It should be noted that Cameroon will be hosting the Baptist men of Africa in Yaounde and men from several African countries.
