One Cameroonian on FIFA referees’ list for Qatar world cup
FIFA has published a list of 36 referees, 69 assistant referees and 24 video match officials appointed for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022
Among the referees is Gambian Gassama Bakary, remembered for the Cameroon – Algeria game after which he was criticized by the Fennec supporters and even threatened. FIFA has judged that his competence and professionalism deserve a spot in the biggest world football jamboree.
Among the assistant referees is Cameroonian Noupue Guy Elvis. The 38 year-old has refereed as an assistant at the CAF champion’s league, FIFA club world cup, FIFA under 20s world cup, the Arab cup, several FIFA friendlies as well as continental world cup qualifier games.
FIFA Referees Committee chairman, Pierluigi Collina said the best quality was selected for this competition and the represent the highest level of refereeing across the world.
For the first time ever in world cup history, 6 women match officials have been appointed. 3 of them (Stéphanie Frappart from France, Salima Mukansanga from Rwanda and Yoshimi Yamashita from Japan) will be referees while the other 3 (Neuza Back from Brazil, Karen Díaz Medina from Mexico and Kathryn Nesbitt from the USA) are assistants.
A team of 24 video match officials will also operate in Qatar, ready to provide their team-mates on the pitch with technological support if needed.
