Officials inspect timid school resumption in NW, SW
Most campuses in the North West and South West regions were uninhabited on September 9, the 2024/2025 resumption day.
In the Ngoketunjia Division of the North West, movements were halted like in the 12 other divisions of these regions by a separatist imposed ghost town. Learners could not be found on school campuses. In a video that circulated online, the D.O for Ndop and Secondary Education Divisional delegate visited GBHS Mbuekong.
Addressing viewers, the administrators said the school’s principal wasn’t present on campus, together with staff. They reminded them of measures, if they were not found on duty subsequently. While pleading for those against resumption to give the learners a chance.
It has been the case of a complete shutdown for the last five years of governments secondary schools in the subdivision, the state broadcaster confirmed. However, private schools were allowed to function later into the academic year.
The case was almost similar in Buea, capital of the South West region. Where only mission boarding schools had classes on the opening day. The South West Governor, Bernard Okalia Bilai visiting the Baptist High School Buea, Presbyterian Comprehensive Secondary School Buea, and Bishop Rogan’s College, saluted the schools administration for bravery.
He, alongside the Regional Delegate of Secondary Education, Dr. Hannah Etounde Mbua told the learners that education was the key to their future and so they should give in their best. Bernard Okalia Bilai regretted that the resumption was timid especially in government schools but hoped it improved across the region.
