Nurses say exposed to many risks

Nurses have said their profession is a calling in which nothing can compensate for the risks involved.

The medical professionals celebrated the International Nurses Day on Friday, May 12.

Delores Kuyein, a nurse based in Yaounde, said she wouldn’t join a different profession no matter how lucrative it is.

“If I’m asked to join a different profession with a pay which is more than what they pay in the nursing profession, I will say no. Once a nurse, I will remain a nurse” she said.

“As nurses, we believe that nobody can pay us. It is only God that can actually pay us” Delores added.

She has been working for 23 years: She recounted the the risks involved; “We are exposed to diseases like for example, COVID 19. Most of us in the nursing profession, we have been affected by the COVID 19 just because we worked on patients that had it.”

“We deal with instruments, we deal with needles. You go to inject a patient, the needle pricks you instead, and now, we are exposed to so many diseases. It’s only God that is taking care of us” the nurse said.

Activities marking the International Nurses Day in Cameroon included sensitization of the population on the importance of nurses in the society.
