Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention as judge recuses herself

Abuja, Nigeria (CNA)– Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), appeared in court on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. Despite being informed of his continued detention for another year, Kanu expressed that this was not a concern for him, given his three years of imprisonment.

During the court proceedings, Justice Binta Nyako, who was presiding over Kanu’s case, recused herself following Kanu’s declaration of a lack of confidence in her. Kanu stated, that he no longer has confidence in her.

He noted that he is shocked that a high court has refused to obey the judgment of the Supreme Court

The IPOB leader also warned that “No court in Nigeria has jurisdiction to try me, because since the charges were said to have been committed in London”

Kanu’s legal battle has been ongoing for several years. The recusal of the presiding judge will likely lead to a delay in the proceedings as a new judge is appointed, but Kanu says he is ready to serve another year.

Kanu says he cannot stand trial because the court changed the location of the charges and removed London, in violation of its laws.
