Nkambe: DO tasks traditional rulers to form vigilante groups to report security threats

Insecurity and separatist threats in most villages in Nkambe, Dongang Matung division of the North West region are reported to be on the rise. The most recent was the gruesome killing of a teacher of the Government School Njap after the 11th February 2023 celebrations.

It is in this light that the Divisional Officer (DO) for Nkambe Ngida Lawrence Che organized an administrative coordination and security meeting on March 5th to tackle some of these issues plaguing his locality.

The meeting was attended by defense and security forces, administrative authorities, religious and traditional rulers, civil society organizations as well as vigilante groups.

According to the DO, apart from the security threats, cattle theft, robbery, and threatening messages have been coming in from the separatist fighters of late hence the necessity to reinforce vigilance in all the 17 villages making up the Nkambe subdivision.
“Talking about vigilance, I will not want to attribute that to groups because every administrator here so long as you are part of this division, it is part of your work. Groups are to be put in place to ensure that,” he opinionated.

He also stated that one of the main problems they face in Nkambe is inadequate materials as some vigilante group workers lack materials to do their work. At the end of the meeting, it was decided that it will be a collective responsibility to ensure the problem is being solved.

It was also decided that all delegates and persons heading administrative services of the subdivision must make the said administration units very friendly for the population.

The traditional authorities on their part resolved to collaborate with the administrative, defense and security forces to keep their respective villages calm and serene.
