Nigerian Customs intercept container carrying 844 rifles
The news was revealed on Monday that members of the Nigerian Custome Services intercepted a container from Turkey that contained 844 rifles and 112,500 live ammunition.
Three men connected with the containers were also arrested for investigations at the Port Harcourt Area II command in Onne, Rivers State.
The Nigerian Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, said they were tipped on June 21, 2024, about a suspected container, and when they inspected it, they found the rifles and ammunition hidden inside furniture, leather bags, and plumbing fittings.
Nigeria is facing attacks from terrorists in the northern regions, but also internal crises such as the proscribed IPOB in the South East, armed banditry and thuggery as well as farmer-grazier conflicts, mostly in its middle belt regions.
The Customs Service said this seizure is a big win as they fight to stop the importation of arms and other dangerous items into the country.
