Nigeria grabs all major awards in Marrakech
The 2023 edition of the CAF Awards took place in Marrakech on Monday, December 11, with Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala winning the two biggest awards.
Victor Osimhen who hugely contributed to Napoli’s Serie A title won last season and who has been instrumental with the Super Eagles, was crowned the African Men’s Player of the Year for the first time.
Oshoala won in the women’s category for a record sixth time. This year she faced stiff competition from South Africa’s Thembi Kgatlana and Zambia’s Barbara Banda in the top three, while Osimhen was voted ahead of Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah and Moroccan full-back Achraf Hakimi.
Nigeria also received distinctions in the Best Female Team and Best Female Goalkeeper categories.
The Best Male Team went to Morocco, Best Male Goalkeeper – Yassine Bounou from Morocco, Coach of the Year for Female Team – Desire Ellis from South Africa, Coach of the Year for Male Team – Walid Regragui from Morocco, and Best Goal by Mahmoud from Egypt.
