The Economic Commission for West African States, ECOWAS Commission has commended Nigeria’s election stakeholders while appealing for calmness during and after elections.

On the eve of Nigeria’s general elections, ECOWAS Commission addressed a public letter to the government and people of Nigeria. In the one-paged letter, the commission commended President Buhari, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and leaders of participating political parties for their efforts towards hitch-free polls.

However, the commission notes incidents of fake news and disinformation and urges leaders of political parties to caution their followers “against acts of pronouncements liable to endanger the peaceful conduct of elections”.

The commission further encourages leaders of political parties [again] and their followers to peacefully accept the verdict of elections, or if felt cheated, “aggrieved parties should seek redress through laid down rules and regulations governing the electoral process.

Nigeria, Africa’s largest democracy goes to the polls tomorrow 25t February to elect a new president, Senators, and parliamentarians. Electoral experts say the polls are tightly fought between three parties and are likely to lead to a rerun for the first time in Nigeria’s elections history. It is also predicted that this may be the first time that someone not from the regular PDP and APC parties that had dominated Nigeria politics may become president.
