Niger junta blocs ECOWAS, UN, AU from visit

The Minister of Foreign Affairs responded to an ECOWAS letter from a representative in Niger seeking an authorisation.

In the response, Niger reminded ECOWAS that due to border closures by the West African bloc, it is impossible to land in Niger via a special flight.

Furthermore, Niger authorities are not ready to receive the delegation especially as their population have recently expressed anger at ECOWAS for sanctioning Niger with huge economic consequences.

“If such visit will happen, we have to scrutinise the list of visitors and authorities they will meet,” the letter read.

The proposed visit on August 8, 2023, was cancelled pending agreement between the bloc and Nigerien junta.
