Niger: Junta appoints new Prime Minister

Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, is the new Prime Minister of Niger Republic. His appointment was read on state media, RTN, Monday.

The caretaker government led by Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani, also signed a series of decrees appointing top officers and Secretary generals of ministries, inspectors general of army and national gendarmerie.

These appointments come to consolidate the power and hegemony over Niger.

The appointments also come 13 days after the Republican army ooverthrow President Mohamed Bazoum.

ECOWAS gave a deadline of Sunday AUgust 6, 2023, for the return to civilian rule but the junta have received massive support from the population.

Mali and Burkina Faso have said any attempt by ECOWAS to attack Niger, will push them to withdraw from the West regional bloc and launch fullscale war.in support of Niger.

58-year-old Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine has served as finance minister under Tandja and is also the AfDB’s country manager.
