New digital platform launched to fight against gender-based violence

The new platform, AlertGBV, was launched by the Women in Entrepreneurship and Technology (WETECH) together with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Douala at the weekend.

According to the founder and executive director of WETECH, Élodie Nonga-Kenla, the platform aims at fighting against gender-based violence in the country.

“Our mission through AlertGBV is not only to provide optimal and adequate assistance to survivors of gender-based violence but also to be a reference cluster of actors, professionals, associations and organizations that help survivors,” she explained.

According to the United Nations, 70% of women worldwide are victims of violence in their lives. In Cameroon, the Association for the Fight against Violence Against Women ALVF estimates that 55% of women have already suffered different forms of violence. This represents nearly 4,900,000 of the population of women in 2018.

The project leaders say the platform mainly allows survivors to receive the adequate help they need in their situation.
“In its testing phase, the website already recorded more than 3,000 visits and the chatbox has already received about thirty testimonials from survivors with more than a dozen people for whom it has been able to offer direct support.”

The platform AlertGBV has begun its deployment phase in other several African countries including, Chad and South Africa. It intends to go beyond by allowing individuals in Africa and abroad to offer assistance packages to victims or companies to benefit from training and awareness sessions on GBV.

It should be recalled that Wetech was the first winner of the international competition “Join Innovation Challenge 2022”. This competition, organized by the United Nations Population Fund aims at providing funds to social enterprises offering innovative solutions that advance the empowerment of women and girls around the world.
