New CEMAC government to fight poverty in sub- region

Poverty in Africa is said to be primarily a Sub-Saharan African phenomenon and is largely concentrated in the least developed countries, LDCs, while middle-income countries have less than 5% of their population in poverty, research shows.
The new Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa, CEMAC, Executive body has declared that they intend to fight poverty and all the ills that have negative effects on the lives of the people in the Sub-region.
This was stated on July 17, 2023, in Douala during the start of the first meeting of the CEMAC commission leaders since the new government was put in place.
The President of the CEMAC commission Baltasar Engonga Edjo’o also announced plans to make the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa a free trade zone, characterized by security, solidarity, and good governance at the service of human development.
“This meeting is to put in place a spirit that will guide my team during our term of office. All our objectives can be attained by carrying out the plan of action geared towards the socio-economic development of CEMAC states and the education of its people,” he said.
He further stated that the commission staff must regularly attend courses to develop ideas to effectively execute the plans and attend to the goals.
The new CEMAC government has set 2025 as its deadline to remarkably transform the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa.
The leaders were appointed 4 months ago, during the 15th ordinary session of the heads of states conference that took place in Yaounde.
The Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa, CEMAC aims at promoting peace and development of its member states, in the framework of establishing an economic union and a monetary union.
But free circulation of persons and goods have never been respected by some countries like Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
