More structures visited by Yaounde City Council sledge hammer

The Yaounde City Mayor on Tuesday August 30, 2022, ordered his agents to destroy houses and business kiosks erected on the public road or pedestrian tracks.

The Council says the exercise is aimed at giving the political capital city a new facelift.

The Mayor and his agents did not spare reducing the kiosks they met on their way to rubble.

According to the municipal authority, this move is not the first nor the last. It began before the start of the TotalEnergies 2021 African Cup of Nations.

“It’s not a break-in operation, it’s a clean-up operation. This cleaning had started during the preparation of the AFCON 2021. On this occasion, we moved around the city several times to free the pedestrian paths. This operation was repeated few months after the continental football tournament participants. “Explained the Yaounde City on state radio.

He continued, “We found that old habits resurfaced. The liberated areas were invaded in an anarchic way and it was therefore necessary to carry out this cleaning. In some places you see kiosks with the X dating from 2021 with quit deadlines. Unfortunately, some were stubborn and it was normal for us to come and free these areas again”. Specified Luc Messi Atangana.

The Yaounde City Mayor concluded that the operation will continue till the war against urban disorder is won.

Same exercise took place weeks back in Cameroon’s economic capital Douala with several buildings and kiosks on the public road destroyed.

The order by the Douala City Council Mayor, Roger Mbassa Ndiné affected several business persons. The clearing of pedestrian tracks on which traders market their goods has also been a preoccupying phenomenon to the Souao City Council authorities.
