More Cameroonians do not trust ELECAM, Afrobarameter reports

Afrobarameter has reported from a survey conducted from 2021 – 2023 that a greater proportion of Cameroonians do not trust the agency managing elections in the country.

The data was obtained in a survey 38 countries on the African continent. It asserted that, only 39% of Africans trust their national electoral commission.

Afrobarameter, an independent African research network on democracy, good governance and quality of life assured that, the survey involved a face to face interview with 1200- 2400 persons in each country.

In the case of Cameroon, only 34% of respondents credited Elections Cameroon, (ELECAM). 66% expressed distrust and none was on a middle ground.

Worse than Cameroon and last three on the list is Eswatini, Angola and Gabon with a percentage trust of 22, 21, and 16 respectively.

This survey published on The Continent magazine 164 issue on Saturday May 18, 2024 comes months to municipal, legislative and Presidential polls of 2025 in Cameroon.

The present regime has for the last thirty years been accused of electoral malpractices and vote swindling by opposition leaders.

The campaign for great voter registration is currently ongoing nevertheless by various civil society organizations and political fronts.

Agbor Nkongho Balla, leader of an international human rights Organisation (CHRDA) headquartered in Cameroon opined on Dash radio – Buea that, massive registration and voting will make it difficult for election results fixing since the figures will be alarming.

Cameroon’s minister of Territory Administration for his part has warned against entities forcing voter registration.
