MINAT bans use of private bouncers in debt recovery, other disputes

The use of bouncers in Cameroon does not end at the level of nightclubs! These men with big muscles and fearsome faces are also used to scare thieves, protect wealthy people by acting as their security, among others.

But what has triggered the Minister of Territorial Administration is the misuse of these bouncers in settling disputes and debt recoveries.

In Cameroon, it is very common to see bouncers evict someone from their homes, acting on instructions of the landlord.

This scenario is also seen during land disputes, where bouncers are used to evict people from land. At some points, they use force that could lead to injuries or deaths.

The Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, warned in a recent order that the use of these men as private militias or security is banned by the 1997 constitution.

He stated that their activities have been linked to violent and brutal behavior, compromising public order.

According to Minister Atanga Nji, the law prohibits the creation and maintenance of private militias. Debt recovery and evictions must be carried out by the law, with the assistance of law enforcement officials if necessary, he added.

He instructed Regional Governors to take firm action to eradicate this phenomenon in their respective jurisdictions.

The goal is to restore public order, ensure citizen safety, and uphold the rule of law, he noted.
