Microsoft is shutting down Internet Explorer for good after nearly 30 years

By Ngala Hansel

Microsoft has announced the permanent termination of its Internet Explorer (IE) browser after 27 years.

The company announced a year ago that it was putting an end to Internet Explorer on June 15, 2022. The move means IE will no longer be compatible with Windows software and will instead be replaced by another browser called Edge, founded in 2015 by Microsoft.

In a blog post published in May 2021, Sean Lyndersay, general manager of Microsoft Edge stated that “Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, more secure and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it is also able to address a key concern: compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications”.

Some Cameroonians have expressed sadness and mixed feelings over the discontinuation of IE by Microsoft.

In Cameroon many using the internet today have passed through diverse schools that had IT incorporated in the school curriculum.
