Messi says “a little afraid” his career will be ending soon
Lionel Messi has stirred reactions about his career after revealing that Inter Miami may be his last club.
Despite pointing out to ESPN that it does not mean he is “ready to leave football”, an understanding of his statement suggests that he is thinking of retirement after his contract with MLS side Inter Miami ends.
Messi moved from PSG to Inter Miami in July 2023 after signing a contract with the Major League Soccer club. The contract is expected to last until the end of 2025 with the option of an additional year.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner now 36, said “It was a difficult step to leave Europe to come here”. However, he has built new relationships and is having a good time, which he said he now wants to enjoy more while he is still there.
“I love playing football. I enjoy the training, everyday of the matches” Messi said. “I enjoy the little details that I know I am going to miss when I don’t play anymore” he added.
“That’s why I enjoy everything much more, because I’m aware that there’s less and less to go.”
Messi spent a greater part of his career in Barca, where he won four UEFA Champions League titles and 10 LaLiga titles during his 17 years at the club.
