Meme Division: Man suspected of stealing mobile phone, beaten to death
It was discovered the next day that he did not steal the phone
The victim was hung and beaten to death by some young men who accused him of stealing a mobile phone belonging to a villager.
The incident on April 1, 2023, left the family devasted. Yannick Moiti, 23, lived with his Aunt who raised him in Bole Bakundu, Meme division in the South West region. That fateful day, Yannick’s crime was passing beside a house whose occupant would later raise the alarm over a missing mobile phone.
The owner was asked whom he saw around the area and he mentioned Yannick Moiti. The victim was picked up, and tied to a tree and youths took several turns to beat him to death.
“The next day which was Sunday it was discovered that he was not the one who stole the phone
Yanick Moiti was beaten to death and buried that Saturday night,” his cousin, Ndifor Godlove told CNA.
The suspects who beat up Yannick include Esimoto Kilvus, Okena Juvert, Okana Nakomo, Okana Melvo, Ngetti, Besingi Franklin Erume, Ekeh Louis Figo among others.
“I want this phenomenon to end, it is not something new. Before the crisis started, such things have been happening,” Ndifor said.
In a video obtained by CNA, the victim is heard pleading for mercy, while asking to be given water to drink.
But his accusers laughed at him and said, if they give him water, he will disappear.
Another video showed how he was tied to a tree and beaten until he lost his breath.
