Melong DO launches fight against violence in schools
The Divisionsl Officer (D.O.) of Melong together with other security officials in the Moungo division of the Littoral region visited the Saint Micheal Bilingual College as well as College Tchumo Aaron in Melong when all the students were out of their classrooms. The classes were interrupted and a thorough search was carried out.
This followed a fight between a teacher and his students on campus at the St Micheal College on January 16th, 2023.
“Alcohol consumption, smoking, and violence in schools be it between students or students and their teachers should stop,” Alaine Blaise Biko, D.O. of Melong says.
During their search, over 100 cell phones and weapons were seized from the students.
According to the school administrators, the coming of the security forces is a plus for them as they have limited means to contain the students.
“We the school administrators do not have the means and all that it takes to contain these students especially when it comes to discipline,” one of the principals, Dieunedort Tagen said.
The DO says the role of parents in the education of their children is very vital:
“We need to communicate with the parents of these students so they can properly follow up with their children at home for a better education”.
A joint effort is therefore needed from the parents, teachers, and authorities to fight against violence in schools.
The situation comes at a time when the secondary education Minister, Pauline Nalova Lyonga has prohibited all forms of corporal punishment in schools across the country. The minister also warned that sanctions await teachers who will still go ahead with such practices.
