Medic explains why food poisoning is common at parties
After the recording of several deaths and life threatening cases resulting from food poisoning at celebrations usually believed to be a criminal act, Dr. Roger Etoa, a medical doctor explains that this is not always the case.
According to his findings on the toxicity of festival meals, most cases of food poisoning are not criminal but caused by ignorance or carelessness.
“It is necessary to check the food preparation process as well as conservation methods. In the majority of weddings in Cameroon, the buffets are opened very late: midnight, even 2 am. All cold meals (salads, natural fruit juices, desserts, etc.) have had time to ferment and/or become contaminated. This is the source of toxi-contaminations which lead to gastro-enteritis of an intensity which can be very severe evn leading to septic shocks and these are life-threatening.” The doctor explains.
The Medic has thus proposed some precautionary measures to limit or avoid food poisoning at ceremonies.
“My suggestions: at public buffets (weddings, birthdays, funerals, etc.) eat only hot meals (served in hot pots) or dry meals. Avoid all cold meals, even if they are attractive or if you are engaged in an organic diet… Have at home an emergency medical kit including at least oral rehydration salts (ORASEL), activated charcoal (there are several varieties in pharmacies) and antibiotics that affect the digestive bacterial flora (Flagyl Ciprofloxacin, Doxycycline, etc.)”
The population are also advised to visit the hospital or call a medic once they suspect or experience signs of food poisoning such as upset stomach, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever.
