Mbankolo Landslide: Student predicted two years ago
This has nothing to do with prophecy but the hard work of a student who carried out thorough research in the Mbankolo area and warned that the people face a high risk of a natural disaster if measures are not taken to prevent it.
In 2021, a Master’s student at the Higher National School of Public Works, Kuaban Frank William, submitted a thesis, titled, ” Landslide Disaster Risk Awareness, Knowledge and Preparedness of the Inhabitants of the Yaounde 2 Municipality- Case of the Mbankolo Neighborhood”
This thesis was aimed at obtaining a Master of Engineering in Town planning.
The English-speaking student would later obtain his degree but the recommendations were never utilised.
Master thesis in Cameroon is purely academic and once the student passes, the booklet is dumped somewhere in the faculties.
Since the warnings were never taken into account, on Sunday 8, 2023, the Mbankolo inhabitants witnessed a deadly landslide that took away dozens of lives in the Yaounde 2 Council area. The government said they could identify 28 corpses but several others were left unidentified- figures were above 30.
