Maurice Kamto would win presidentail elections if organised today

This is the outcome of a survey carried out by English Cameroon for United Cameroon platform.

In the September 2024 poll which consisted of 846 participants, “We find that if that election were held today, and if Mr. Paul Biya were the CPDM presidential candidate, Mr. Maurice Kamto of the opposition would win such an election with about 52.6%. Mr. Paul Biya would be in the third position with 13.6%, behind Mr. Cabral Libii whose support stands at 14.9%. The relative performance of these top three candidates is not much different from that found in our opinion poll of June 2024.” the platform revealed in a report released on September 20, 2024.

The report suggested that it was time for the ruling CPDM party to elect a younger person to take over the party’s Chairman position.
“Given that Mr. Biya will be on the eve of his 93rd birthday at the time of the next election and given the fierce competition from the opposition, it is reasonable for the CPDM to nominate a new party leader and presidential candidate. The CPDM has largely ignored their party constitution on the regular organization of party congresses and democratic elections.”

The poll further stated that the top five potential presidential candidates of the CPDM who could replace President Paul Biya are

Mr. Joseph Dion Ngute (26.5%), Mr. Marafa Hamidou Yaya (16.5%), Mr. Philemon Yang (13.9%), Mr. Alamine Ousmane Mey (13.0%), and Mr. Franck Biya (8.4%).

“With respect to the opposition, many Cameroonians want these politicians to creatively resolve the well-known problems of electoral fraud, intimidation of competitive opposition politicians, and sowing of discord among opposition politicians by CPDM agents. One practical proposal calls for the formation of a unified or a reasonably enlarged opposition front to compete against the CPDM. One of the sticking points of this proposal is who will be the ultimate presidential candidate representing the unified or reasonably enlarged front.”

Based on their poll, the ranking of opposition politicians looks like this Mr. Maurice Kamto of MRC/CRM (50.4%), Mr. Cabral Libii of PC RN (19.5%), Mr. Aboubakar Ousmane Mey of ANC (4.7%), Mr. Abakar Ahamat – Independent (4.0%), and Mr. Joshua Osih of SDF (3.8%).
