Maumu raid:99 freed for over 5.8 million- Rights advocate
Recent updates from Maumu have that 93 out of 105 persons on October 29, paid 50, 000 frs each for their release from the Gendarmerie headquarters in Buea.
Human rights activists Ndape Sally in an advocacy post on her official social media handle affirmed she witnessed of the payment. She explained that 6 others caught during the protest on October 24, paid 1,240.000 fcfa. A video she published alongside shows a pastor who is albino, alleged to be an indegene counting a bundle of money before the barack.
Sally said the money suming to 5,890.000 was contributed by the community and paid for the freedom of the detained in awareness of the Maumu chief, HRM Embola Charles.
“The grassroot population went back yesterday very angry,” she added. The statement of the Maumu chief only indicated the release. Of the 105 picked and locked up on October 20, only 93 gained freedom by order from the military tribunal on October 29.
The women of the community had staged a protest four days after the mass arrests. It resulted in the arrest of six more during the demonstration.
