Douala: Inhabitants await crematorium

Announced for the first time in 2016, the cremation chamber situated at Bois des Singes is yet to serve its purpose as it has almost been abandoned.

The cremation chamber with a functional furnace worth 200 million FCFA will be rehabilitated and put at the service of the population in the coming months so they can either choose to bury or cremate their dead. The announcement was made by the Douala city mayor Dr Roger Mbassa Ndine during a meeting with traditional rulers of the Bell Canton in the Wouri division. In the course of their exchanges, he also disclosed that some corpses will be dug-up and tombstones destroyed to ease the in and out movements at the burial grounds.

While urging youth of Bonapriso, Youpwe and Bonanjo to participate in the development of their communities, Dr Mbassa Ndine announced the construction of a mud drainage system to reduce floods recorded recently in the Douala I district. Youth have also been told to stop destroying mangroves in River Wouri as this is considered one of the factors causing the scarcity of “MbeaTowe” – prawns – the fish which gave Cameroon a name.

Traditional rulers have vowed to increase youth participation in development projects in their communities, but have begged on the city mayor to hit hard on urban disorder and insecurity.
