What was meant to be a joyous homecoming became a day of grief in Cameroon’s Far North Region after a deadly road accident claimed four lives and left several others seriously injured near Maroua.
The tragedy unfolded on Sunday, June 7, at Gaklé, about five kilometres from Maroua along the national road number 1. A Hiace minibus carrying a pilgrim returning from Mecca and members of his family was travelling from Garoua when it veered off the road and crashed into a tree.
According to witness accounts, the driver was attempting to avoid a sheep crossing the roadway when he lost control of the vehicle. The minibus reportedly skidded before slamming into the tree with great force.
Four people were killed instantly, including two children aged two and seven. Two other family members also lost their lives in the crash.
The returning pilgrim and his wife were among the seriously injured victims and were rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Other passengers also sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment.
Rescue soldiers and security forces responded swiftly to the scene, carrying out rescue operations and securing the area. The Governor of the Far North Region later visited the site to assess the situation.
Authorities have launched an investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the accident.
A journey that began with celebration and thanksgiving ended in heartbreak, leaving a family and an entire community mourning the loss of loved ones.
