Manyemen chieftaincy: Fesh consultative talks announced as SDO deposes “appointed” chief
By Nchendzengang Tatah
A contested decision on the chieftaincy in Manyemen, Kupe Muanenguba Division, South West region, has been withdrawn a year after. The decision issued by the SDO for Kupe Manenguba, Mungambo Ekema Williams, on December 7, 2023, to recognize Mr Besong Williams as the designated chief of Manyemen was nullified by the SDO who issued it.
The prefectoral order made consideration of instructions from the hierarchy. An overturn that follows petitions sent to administration, reflecting on the legality of chieftaincy accorded Besong Williams in Manyemen. Fresh consultative talks are to be convened within fifteen days of the new order by the DO for Nguti, to begin due process of selecting a replacement for Chief Eben Jacob the Manyemen ruler who passed on in 2022.
Fight for order
In an October 7 letter, copied the Presidency and Prime Ministry, which CNA has seen, the family heads of Manyemen said the procedure to select and endorse Bisong Williams was lacking in several ways. The eight patriarchs who co-signed the document had challenged the grounds of the SDO’s decision in the issue. They had called for a redress, which preceded a visit to the Divisional and Nguti Administrative offices to reconcile the administration with the facts.
“Without a doubt, superiors of the SDO have heeded the cries of the people of Manyemen, giving instructions for fresh consultative talks towards choosing a new traditional ruler for Manyemen. The people of Manyemen have thus won,” Franklin Sone Bayen, media spokesperson of the Manyemen family heads said.
