Malawi President suspends international travel for himself and cabinet ministers
The President of Malawi Lazarus Chakwera, has banned international travelling for himself and all cabinet ministers.
He was speaking in a televised address on Wednesday, November 15, and said the move is meant to cut down on government spending and to “save money”.
Lazarus Chakwera asked all government officials out of the country to return “with immediate effect”.
The measures taken shall be implemented for the rest of the financial year which will run until March 2024.
“Any travel deemed absolutely necessary by anyone during this period must be submitted to my office for my personal authorization” the President said.
Malawi has been facing a huge shortage of petrol as well as high inflation. President Chakwera who took over from Peter Mutharika in 2020, has blamed the challenges on COVID-19 and the effects of the Russian-Ukraine war.
