Maize retailers accuse farmers of unjustified inflation of prices in West region
The farmers who depend on sales of their farm produce say their living conditions have become unbearable as they now put in more resources into their farms to have a better Corn harvest.
These additional efforts have caused prices to witness a hike.
Retailers in Galim village who buy in small quantities to resell have said the price hike is not justified.
On Saturday, September 17, 2022, they went to the Kieneghang market in Galim Subdivision but came back with empty bags because they could not afford the prices.
A 15L bucket of dried maize, usually sold at FCFA 2000, suddenly saw its price increase to at least FCFA 2500 and 3000.
The local subsistence farmers say they are faced with major economic difficulties, reason why they are obliged to take such decisions. One of the difficulties they face is the inflation in the prices of farming inputs like a bag of fertilizer they acquire at FCFA 40, 000 but previously bought between FCFA 16,000-25, 000.
Added to this, the farmers say they are also faced with back-to-school challenges at the moment, and selling corn at the normal price will not help them meet up these challenges.
This decision is expected to be extended to other local markets as we learned. The authors of this decision are also expected to meet with competent authorities in the days ahead.
