MAGIL blames sports ministry for Olembe stadium fiasco
Magil Construction Corporation has rebuked what it qualifies as unfounded attacks on her by the country’s sports ministry and has reiterated their decision to work in collaboration with the state to finalize the Olembe stadium project. The information is contained in a press release signed by the company’s management and dated January 11 2023.
According to the release, the sports ministry jeopardized the project execution as at the beginning of 2023, MAGIL and the subcontractors have still not received any payment for their invoices which had allegedly been validated by MINSEP, since July 2022. Coupled to the non-renewal of tax and customs exemptions linked to the projects, the discovery of numerous defects in the stadium and request for additional additional work increasing the total construction budget, the company says they had run out of ways of resolving the issue quietly.
MAGIL in the release adds that they initiated steps to find a means of conciliation for the proper execution of the Olembe stadium starting since April 12 2022 followed by a conciliation committee on August 23rd, 2022.
Thereafter, multiple correspondence addressed to the ministry remained unanswered. This forced MAGIL on December 05, 2022 to give the ministry a 30-day notice period before putting an end to works at the construction site.
The release further states that MAGIL attended a series of meetings on January 10 with authorities in Yaounde to amicably settle the issue and during those meetings, the Executive Vice President of MAGIL, Franck Mathière reiterated the company’s commitment to the state of Cameroon and say they hope that the provisions of the contracts signed, will be respected in order to pay the sub-contractors who have worked tirelessly for the success of the Africa cup of nations which Cameroon hosted.
