Lekie Chiefs celebrate “death” of MRC leader Kamto, Cameroonians condemn act
Some Chiefs in the Lekie Division, Centre region, celebrated what they described as the symbolic political death of an opposition leader, Maurice Kamto.
Pictures of the celebration were shared on social media, they are seen holding a wooden coffin, painted in red with the picture of the leader of the Cameroon Rennaisance Movement on the coffin.
A Facebook user said, “Shame on the chiefs of the Lekie who claim to have weakened Prof Maurice Kamto and the MRC because they will only have big eyes to cry in 2025,”
These same traditional rulers had been caught up in a controversial outing whereby they threatened that nemesis would catch up with the killer of journalist Martineze Zogo in February 2023. They had given 40 days to the perpetrators but later retracted after warnings from the Minister of Territorial Administration.
“Are they really the guarantors of tradition?… they’re looking for bribes from their elites!” another person commented.
“Unable to hold the justice system of our country to account since the assassination of “their son” (Martinez Zogo), a few drinkers of badly adulterated wine, made chief of the Lekié, organized the funeral of Maurice Kamto, for having given his opinion on the man Hubert Mono Ndjana, who died recently.”
Cameroon recently adopted laws that would punish those who are found guilty of tribalism or any form of hate speech. The amendment of Article 241 of the country’s penal code was meant to stop hate speech and promote social cohesion. Violators could face a penalty of one to two years imprisonment and or a fine of up to Three million FCFA.
