Kamala Harris says US to invest $7 billion to fight climate change in Africa

The US Vice President Kamala Harris has announced a private sector investment worth USD 7 billion (4,207,000,000,000. Fcfa) to help Africa combat and adapt to climate change.

The announcement was made during a press conference held with Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema on March 31st.

Her week-long trip to Africa comes to an end today April 1 after she visited three African countries: Ghana, Tanzania, and Zambia.

The private funding will comprise investments by a mix of 27 companies and organizations. The funding will be used for the promotion of climate-smart agriculture and to tackle the effects of climate change on Africa’s food security. Some of the funds she stated will be used for projects in sustainability, clean energy and clean transportation.

She also noted that the US would provide more federal funding to improve access to climate information services.

Studies have proven that even though African countries add relatively less towards the climate crisis, the repercussions faced on the continent are substantial.

Harris Kamala had highlighted that there are opportunities in the clean energy economy that could help generate growth in Africa.

She hopes to increase the US’ economic investments on the continent, a reference to counter China’s growing influence across the continent.
